Venting and Insulation Made Easy

YBS BreatherFoil is a 2-in-1 Breathable and Venting Membrane. It has been designed and certified to replace a traditional breather membrane. It also has been proven to greatly improve the U-value, due to its reflective outer foil layer.

BreatherFoil FR creates a wind and draught-free seal – this helps protect the walls and the timber frame’s structure whilst it is in construction.

You can either; Staple BreatherFoil FR directly onto the plywood timber boards – which allows the reflective foil to face the external of the property.

Or, you can install BreatherFoil FR in a factory scenario.

We advise when installing BreatherFoil FR on the walls, to overlap it by 75mm. Leave the horizontal overlaps untapped – this allows moisture to dissipate.

The external timber frame can be installed with the external finish of your choice, whether that be Blockwork, Cladding, or Brick.

Preparing the Building

Prepare the BreatherFoil by removing any exisiting Cladding on the external of the walls, exposing the OSB / Sarking Board.
Stapling the BreatherFoil

Staple the BreatherFoil directly to the external timber boarding, at a minimum of 300mm intervals.
Vertical Joints

Vertical Joints; ensure a minimum overlap of 100mm & seal using ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape.
Horizontal Joints

Horizontal Joints; ensure a minimum overlap of 75mm, leaving the overlaps untaped.
Stapling the Second Layer of BreatherFoil

Staple the BreatherFoil directly to the external timber boarding, at a minimum of 300mm intervals.
Sealing the Perimeter

Seal the vertical perimeter using ThermaSeal Foil Tape, leaving the top and bottom untaped.
Installing Battens

Apply a layer of timber battens (minimum of 25mm), perpendicular to the rafters at minimum intervals of 400mm.
Installing External Cladding

Finally apply the external finish in accordance with the manufacturers certification, fixing instructions & good building practice.
