Where in my home are the most vital places to insulate?

In terms of highest energy loss in your home, the majority of heat escapes from your Loft, followed by the Walls then the Floors as heat rises. Although you do know your own home better than anyone, so if there is a particular area that you notice draughts in, this is an indication that more insulation is required.

We have designed a really useful How to Insulate your Home Guide, this details which products we would recommend for your application. This Guide will help you select the products you need to successfully insulate your home, but you can always still Contact Us if you wish to discuss your specific application or require any assistance.

Which insulation is best to use in a conservatory?

The best multifoil to use when insulating a conservatory roof would be our EcoQuilt Expert this is due to the material being thinner when compacted, lighter and easier to install overhead.

Although SuperQuilt can also be used under a conservatory roof too, it just doesn’t compress as much as Ecoquilt, lowering the ceiling height.

How do I work out how many rolls of ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape l will need?

On average, we recommend using one roll of ThermaSeal Foil Joining Tape for every 30 Square Metres of Material.

Thermaseal Foil Joining Tape comes on 75mm x 50m Rolls. Please visit our Things You’ll Need page to purchase this and view other handy products you may require for your project.

Can SuperQuilt alone be used for a loft conversion?

Although SuperQuilt is the highest performing certified Multifoil on the market, it usually requires additional insulation if your project is going through building control.

Please see our Free to Use Online U-Value Calculator to find the best insulation method for your project.

If you need assistance choosing a product makeup you are welcome to get in touch.

If you are not going through building regulations for your project, you may opt to use 1 or two layers of SuperQuilt to the underside of your roof rafters or at your loft floor level.

What are the differences between SuperQuilt and EcoQuilt?

Both SuperQuilt and EcoQuilt can be used for the same applications. Although there are differences between the two and in some cases one should be used oppose to the other.

SuperQuilt holds BBA & BDA certification and is approved by NHBC & LABC for Building Control. SuperQuilt is the thicker of the two, it has 19 layers including True Aluminium Foils, Waddings, PE Foam & Met Pet layers, and is therefore the higher performing product.

EcoQuilt Expert is made up of 6 layers of Foil and Wadding, this is beneficial for projects where space is at a minimum such as conservatory roofs, sheds, containers etc.

Both products also have a built in Vapour Control Layer, when installed fully taped and sealed.

SuperQuilt is 40mm thick but compresses to approximately 10mm. EcoQuilt is 15mm thick but compresses to approximately 6mm.

Is SuperQuilt Insulation Breathable?

SuperQuilt is not a breathable material, it works as a high performing vapour control layer, stopping any air and moisture from passing through the material when fully taped and sealed.

If you are looking for a Breathable Multifoil we would instead advise using BreatherQuilt. BreatherQuilt consists of 11 perforated layers, including a fully waterproof breather membrane, and a reflective True Aluminium Foil on the inner face. This is commonly used over rafter and replaces the need for a traditional breather membrane, whilst also providing insulation benefits.

Can insulation be installed directly under carpets or floorboards?

Yes, Eco-Tec FloorFoam is a 4mm thick insulation material which is specifically designed to go underneath Carpets, Wood, Laminate and Vinyl. Floorfoam significantly reduces draughts and helps to reflect heat back into the room which would normally be lost.

Using SuperQuilt or EcoQuilt Expert to insulate underneath flooring requires air gaps, so therefore it cannot be used directly between Carpet and Floorboards. These products are best used when you are taking the floorboards up / have access to the underside.

Can SuperQuilt alone be used to achieve Building Regulations?

SuperQuilt achieves the majority of U-values without the requirement for additional insulation, especially in walls and floors.

To find out if SuperQuilt will work for your project please use our free and easy to use Online U-value Calculator.

What is the best tool to cut Multifoil products with?

Our range of Multifoils can be cut easily with a sharp Stanley Knife or pair of Multifoil Scissors. Pulling the multifoil taut before cutting ensures a cleaner cut edge.

We sell excellent Multifoil Scissors, as well as a complete Multifoil Fitting Kit. Please visit our Things You’ll Need page to purchase these items.

Technical

Do I need to leave an air gap either side of multifoils when installing?

Yes, to get the maximum thermal performance from our multifoils, it is essential to leave an airspace either side of the product.

This allows them to reflect and perform to their highest potential. If space either side isn’t possible, then at least one airspace is vital.

What does the term R-Value mean?

An R-Value is a measure of resistance to the flow of heat through a given thickness of a material, such as insulation. Higher numbers indicate better insulating properties.

What does the term U-Value mean?

A U-value is a measure of the heat transition through a building part (e.g. a Wall) the lower the number, the better the thermal properties.

If your project is going through building control you will more than likely need to achieve a specific U-value.

Our U-Value Calculator will give you instant results for your specific requirements.

Multifoil insulation is a dual-purpose form of insulation.

In winter months it works by reflecting the cold away, but also reflecting heat back into your home, then in the summer months multifoil’s help reflect excess heat away, keeping your home at a comfortable cooler temperature.

Multifoils have been proven to save on cost, space and labour time. They are becoming increasingly popular due to these reasons.
